Where else will you have the pleasure to sit with your hostess for hours on end (if you choose) while she tells you about her love for the city, gives you tips on the very best places to see, eat, and venture to, and offers you cookies and local brews? I stayed in Hostel Lucky for two nights during my trip to Sarajevo, and was impressed with how they treated all their guests – picking them up from city center, making sure a couple’s anniversary was extra special by decorating the private room with rose petals, and helping guests feel at home in the huge living room area. The location is in a quiet neighborhood within 10 minutes walk of the main square, and 3 minutes from the mountains. And the price? In February 2016 I paid a whopping 5 euros per night!

Fancy a view from your bedroom’s balcony of one of the world’s most iconic bridges? How about an excursion to some of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s main attractions? I stayed with Elite Guest House Mostar and found their services to be top-notch. A family-owned business, they have several options available for single travelers and groups, and many of their rooms look out at Stari Most, Mostar’s famous bridge. They also organize daily excursions to visit Blagaj Monastery, swim in Kravice Falls, and wander around the village Pocitelj, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I stayed in a pleasant twin room, and hope to return with a group to stay in one of their large apartments, equipped with kitchen, dining room, laundry, and more. Bonus: they always have sweet little candies sitting out. Sometimes it’s the little things that count.

“I’ll meet you with grappa” she said after I secured my spot at Hostel and Rooms Ana. The owner (Ana, of course) stayed true to her word and on my first night’s stay in one of the hostel rooms just steps away from Old Town Dubrovnik’s main square, I sat upstairs with her and fellow travelers taking sips of the strong drink. Ana’s Hostel provides the perfect atmosphere to build a strong community – each night, we all gathered around the table, cooking dinner together and even were delighted when Ana offered us each a bowl of her own homemade soup served with fresh bread.

Hostel Old Town Kotor was carefully renovated and decorated with classic antiques and welcomes thousands of guests each year into their charming environment. While the beds are already affordable, for just 3 euro more per night, you can order a delicious home cooked dinner – and you get a free breakfast the next morning! After dinner, relax in the lounge with other guests and the hosts, but mind the very best rule I’ve come across: No Talk of Geography After Dinner (that means: No “have you been…” “I’d like to go…” etc.) Save it for the next day and enjoy some real conversations, travelers!

The hostel is located in Tivat, a small town of 14000 on the Bay of Kotor. It’s an ideal location for peace and quiet, for adventure, and for all things art. The massive estate has room for large groups and invites several retreats each year to call their place ‘home’ while in Montenegro. It is a short drive from the airport and from the more popular tourist city, Kotor. Expect communal meals, game nights and good times when you book your stay!

A stone’s throw from Austria’s capital city Vienna is that of Slovakia: Bratislava. Bratislava, like Vienna, is brimming with elegantly decorated buildings of colors fit to fill a crayon box. A small town in both atmosphere and size, it is charming in its simplicity. Much the same is the hostel I stayed at in Bratislava. “Hostel Bratislava” has five floors of rooms, each with four rooms of four beds each. On every level is a kitchen, toilet and patio. The space was clean, well kept, and a block from one of the city’s main streets, making it easy to access yet sheltered from street noise.
Kosice Hostel Barno : Privates with Shared Bath from 13euro / night
In this Eastern Slovakian city, Hostel Barno was my stay of choice – a quiet building in a quiet neighborhood set up in a fashion reminiscent to college dorms. Private bedrooms and shared bathrooms are typical, and the simplest single rooms can be rented at 13euro per night. If traveling in a group, quads can be booked for 53euro.

While staying in Slovakia, be sure to stop in Nitra and spend a few cheery nights at the colorful Nitra Glycerin Hostel. I originally chose it for its creative name, but was incredibly impressed by the customer service, cleanliness, and multiple lounge rooms equipped with games, instruments and plenty of places to unwind. Take a look at the photos above for a glimpse of the Nitra Glycerin life. Privates and triples are also available, ranging from 13euro for a single in the dorm to 40euro for an entire triple room.
